The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a pair of twin suspension bridges that span the Tacoma Narrows. The original span was one of the of Tacoma’s most famous landmarks and was nicknamed “Galloping Gertie” after she plunged into the waters below in 1940. It took ten years for the reconstruction to be completed in 1950, linking Tacoma to the Kitsap Peninsula and spurring growth on both sides of the Narrows. That growth gave rise to the need for a second bridge which was completed in 2007. Today the original span handles Westbound traffic, while the new span handles traffic heading into Tacoma from points West.
