The Port of Tacoma – Est. 1918, Tacoma, WA
The Port of Tacoma is an independent, municipal corporation that operates under state enabling legislation. Concerned over the monopoly of shipping facilities by the railroads, Pierce County citizens voted in 1918 to establish the Port of Tacoma. Since its creation, the Port of Tacoma has focused on development of export related facilities and has emerged as a major league container port that covers over 2400 acres and accounts for over 113,000 jobs in Washington state.
